Peru exceeds 300 cases of monkeypox

Lima, July 31. The health authorities of Peru reported this Sunday that the cases of monkeypox rose to 305 in the country, which is the second in America with the most reported infections of this disease, according to the dean of the Medical College of Peru, Raúl Urquizo. .

According to the latest official report from the Ministry of Health, Peru has recorded to date a total of 305 cases of monkeypox in 9 regions of the country, with Lima, where a third of the population lives, being the most affected, with 262 infections.

The rest of the cases were detected in Callao (20), La Libertad (12), Ica (3), Lima Provinces (2), Cusco (2), Tacna (1), Loreto (1) and Junín (1).

The more than 300 patients received medical assistance and 91 of them have already been discharged, according to the portfolio report.

The first case of monkeypox in Peru was confirmed on June 26 in a foreign man who lives in the district of Pueblo Libre, in Lima, and had contact with other people from abroad.

To date, Peru is the second country in America with the most reported cases of this viral disease, according to the dean of the Medical College in statements to the RPP radio station.

“In a few weeks we have significantly increased the number of cases. In America we are in second place. This is because the population at risk is not taking preventive measures,” said Urquizo.

This week, the Minister of Health, Jorge López, indicated that, after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared an international emergency due to the current outbreak, his sector is evaluating acquiring the monkeypox vaccine.

“Of all the indications that it has given to the WHO, we already have 99% in our country (…) the only thing we lack is the vaccine, nothing else, which is currently being evaluated by the committee of experts (for) see if we are going to have the need to buy this vaccine for our risk group,” he said.
