UN Secretary General Angry Peace Forces Shoot Dead 2 Residents in Congo

UN Secretary General Anthony Guterres angry over the deadly shooting incident that left 2 civilians dead in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The reason, the shooting incident was carried out by UN peacekeepers.

“Guterres is ‘sad and disappointed’ to learn of the shooting Sunday morning in the town of Kasindi by members of a peacekeeping unit, said a UN statement,” a UN statement said.

A local civil society leader confirmed the shooting incident. He said two people were killed and several others injured in the incident.

Meanwhile, the UN force known as MONUSCO acknowledged that some of its peacekeepers had opened fire. However, the shooting was carried out “for unexplained reasons”.

Now, the perpetrators have reportedly been arrested.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Guterres said that Guterres expressed his “deepest condolences” to those affected and to the Congolese government. Guterres also supports the detention of the shooters.

“The secretary-general stressed the need to establish accountability for these events,” Guterres’ spokesman said in a statement.

“He welcomes the decision of his special representative in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to detain the MONUSCO personnel involved in the incident and immediately open an investigation.”
