Nadhim Zahawi has been named Chancellor and Steve Barclay as Health Secretary, as Boris Johnson scrambles to refill his top team following a spate of resignations.
Michelle Donelan, who had served as universities minister, will fully join the Cabinet and step into Mr Zahawi’s shoes as Secretary of State for Education.
Mr Zahawi, a millionaire who has advocated for lower taxes, will take charge at the Treasury after the exit of Rishi Sunak, while Mr Barclay – Mr Johnson’s Chief of Staff – will replace Sajid Javid in the Department of Health and Social Care.
Mr Barclay has been brought in to fill a number of vacancies before – having been installed as Downing Street Chief of Staff in February, following the departure of Dan Rosenfield.
He also served previously as Chief Secretary to the Treasury when Rishi Sunak was named Chancellor, and as Theresa May’s Brexit Secretary following the resignation of Dominic Raab.
Nadhim Zahawi made no comment on Tuesday night when asked by press if he would “spray public money around to save Boris Johnson’s skin” before leaving in a ministerial car.
Michelle Donelan smiled as she left Number 10, making no comment as she got inside a car waiting outside.
