An American lucky man has won the third largest amount ever on the American lottery. The person – it is not clear whether it is a man or a woman – from the state of Illinois won $1.28 billion in Mega Millions.

Over the past few weeks, the Mega Millions pot had soared to unprecedented heights. For 29 draws there was no winner. Until now. In the state of Illinois, someone got all the numbers right.
The winner now has a choice: get the full amount spread over 30 annual payments or get 747 million in cash all at once. Almost all jackpot winners have opted for the cash option in the past.
