Software-update: Wine 7.14 – Computer – Downloads

I can only talk about myself about this. Since 2018 I have a new PC with Linux as the only OS on it. I run the Windows games that I have via Proton, which is in fact a further development of Wine specifically aimed at games. I’m not interested in FPS counters and performance overlays, so I can only say if it runs ‘good enough’. The games are from Steam, from Ubisoft, and ‘loose’ games (without launcher). I don’t have to do anything for the Steam games, that just works by clicking Install and Play. I run the Ubisoft and other games via Lutris, a graphical frontend for Proton.

Of the Windows games I play on Linux, I hardly ever have to roll back the performance because it’s too choppy. Practically everything runs smoothly. At the moment I have 1 game that gives some problems, ‘Ready Or Not’, I shouldn’t use the Optiwand to see through doors because then the frame rate drops to 5-10. If I keep that in mind, I can play it. And I had problems with Far Cry 4 and flickering textures (of trees). However, that problem also exists for some Windows users, it is not only the case with Linux. I solved that by assigning this game only 1 CPU core.

I play a lot of Co-op games with friends: Left 4 Dead 2, Company of Heroes 1/2, Deep Rock Galactic, Satisfactory, Factorio, Dying Light 1/2. That all just works. I’ve even modded quite a few games. No problem with that either. It just works, even when I’m playing with others. You can usually activate the mods just like in Windows. Even for Satisfactory I was able to activate mods, it has a special one Linux Mod Manageralthough I had to search for it, because officially only the Windows manager is shown.

What struck me was that when I was in the Loading screen of a Co-op session with others, I usually finished loading faster than the rest. Now I do have a fairly fast PC, but still. When we played a 2nd game, the loading speed was more even, the other Windows PCs usually loaded the cache for that game.

And as I said: I can only talk about myself. I don’t play competitive multiplayer anymore, I’m too old for that. But what I want to do I can just play, without really doing anything difficult. And so far about 95-98% of the games I want to do work. Sometimes I need to install a newer version of Proton for better support, I have an app for that: Select, Click, Install, Activate and then play. Nice and easy. I have no problems with the performance, it just runs ‘good enough’. I don’t have any lag or loss of frame rate.
