Ukraine can once again turn the tide of the war

The US Senate has called on the State Department to designate Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism

Western weaponry has helped Ukrainian troops slow down the Russian troop movement, which has now nearly ground to a halt.

A chance has appeared to turn the tide of the war, says an analysis of The Washington Post.

According to the military, the Russian army has not achieved significant territorial gains since the capture of Lisichansk. The official end of the so-called operational pause announced by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation after the occupation of Lisichansk did not lead to an increase in the intensity of Russian attacks, noted the analyst of the Institute for the Study of War George Barros. He and many Western analysts suspect that the Russians are close to exhausting their options for further territorial gains. They believe that Russia is close to admitting that it cannot take all of Donbas. Barros admits that they may be able to capture Bakhmut and Seversk, but they will not be able to advance further.

The publication notes that there is a major agitation campaign going on in Russia for inclusion in the army to compensate for the huge losses in manpower.

The Ukrainian army has a chance to take the initiative thanks to more advanced artillery and especially the American HIMARS. By using them to destroy ammunition, Ukraine forced the Russians to move their warehouses further from the front line, which lengthened the supply route and complicated the logistics of delivering artillery shells.

The de-occupation of the regions will increasingly depend on Ukraine’s ability to replenish its reserves of manpower, conventional artillery and sufficient ammunition.

The US Senate unanimously passed a resolution yesterday, calling on Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to declare Russia a state sponsor of terrorism, the institution’s website shows.

The resolution, proposed by Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, is not legally binding on President Joe Biden’s administration, but is a form of political pressure on it to take such a step.

The resolution would put Russia in the same category as countries such as North Korea, Cuba, Iran and Syria, which have already been designated by the US as sponsors of terrorism. The resolution recalls this as a justification that in its actions Russia is no different from them.

It also points to the shelling of cities in Chechnya, Georgia, Syria and Ukraine that have resulted in “the deaths of countless innocent men, women and children”, as well as the numerous summary executions of civilians and attempts by Russian forces to cover their tracks. by burying the bodies in mass graves.

The resolution recalls the actions of the Russian mercenary group “Wagner” in Ukraine, Libya, Syria and Sudan and that Russia is “the main supplier of weapons to the Assad regime in Syria and supports terrorists in the Middle East and Latin America, organizes acts of international terrorism, including the poisoning of the Skripal family in the UK, the downing of the Malaysian airliner over Ukraine in 2014, etc.”
