2020 – The federal cabinet adopts stricter rules for larger meat plants. Contract work and temporary work are to be prohibited in the future, and minimum requirements apply to communal accommodation.

2017 – Brussels launches infringement proceedings against Poland. The EU Commission sees the rule of law in Poland in jeopardy due to the highly controversial judicial reform.

2004 – The German Football Association (DFB) introduces ex-national player Jürgen Klinsmann as the new national coach and Oliver Bierhoff as team manager.

1997 – The Palestinian Souhaila Andrawes is being transferred from Hamburg to Oslo to serve out the remainder of her sentence. Andrawes was involved in the 1977 hijacking of the Lufthansa plane “Landshut”.

1992 – Erich Honecker, former head of state of the GDR, is arrested in Berlin. After months of diplomatic tug-of-war, he left the Chilean embassy in Moscow and was flown to Berlin on a Russian plane.

1990 – The first free elections in the history of the country are held in Mongolia. The winner is the ruling communist Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party (MPRP).

1967 – A fire on the deck of the US aircraft carrier “Forrestal” in the Gulf of Tonking in the South China Sea kills 134 people.

1957 – The statutes of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) come into force. It was founded in 1956 as an autonomous sub-organization of the United Nations (UN). Administrative seat becomes Vienna.
