Previously, it was possible to hear reports that all of the Samsung Galaxy S23 smartphones that will be released next year will be powered by the current top-of-the-range Snapdragon processor in all markets. The reason behind the decision may be the unpopularity of the in-house developed Exynos chips, as well as their performance and other problems. This was almost confirmed by the CEO of Qualcomm, who spoke in his earnings report for the second quarter about what to expect from the South Korean manufacturer’s upcoming flagships next year.
Cristiano Amon, the CEO of Qualcomm, started by saying that 75 percent of Galaxy S22 devices already have a Snapdragon chip inside, and then went on to say that this percentage will increase next year. This essentially confirmed the analysts’ speculation that only Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will be running under the hood of the Galaxy S23 models.
“Before the agreement, 75 percent of Galaxy S22 devices were powered by the Snapdragon chip. This ratio will only be higher for the Galaxy S23 models and in the future.” – claimed the head of Qualcomm.
In addition to smartphones, the collaboration between Qualcomm and Samsung also applies to laptops, Windows PCs and some tablets, and in the future will also extend to augmented reality devices and other gadgets, Amon added. The two companies have extended their patent licensing agreement through 2030, covering 3G, 4G, 5G and possibly 6G devices.
All these developments do not at all mean that Exynos chips and the department that develops them are over. In the short term, Samsung aims to be able to utilize the chips developed in-house within other platforms, for example inside smart watches and other wearable devices. The mid-range and entry-level Exynos chips are likely to remain, and according to the indications, they will also be sold to external partners.
Allegedly, the Exynos 2230 5G under development did not live up to expectations, which is why Samsung executives decided to neglect high-end Exynos solutions. As for the Galaxy S23 models debuting next year, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 inside them may be presented sometime in mid-November this year, and the first devices with this chip are expected in December. The Samsung Galaxy S23 series could arrive sometime in early 2023.
By the way, some sources say that Samsung has put together a team tasked with developing a brand new chipset for smartphones that goes beyond the Exynos chips. It may take some time for this particular chipset to be ready, so Snapdragon chips will power the current Galaxy S series flagships until at least 2024.
