Highly contagious, deadly Marburg virus emerged in Ghana

The first report of the highly contagious, Ebola-like disease was made in Ghana two weeks ago. In the end, two people were found to be infected. They had symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, nausea and vomiting. They both later died in hospital.

Research on contacts

In the search for the approximately 180 known contacts of the two infected persons, two more infections have now been found.

It is the second outbreak of the Marburg virus in West Africa after it was diagnosed last year had surfaced in Guinea. The virus is transmitted to humans through certain types of bats or contaminated meat, and can spread to other humans through direct contact with blood or other bodily fluids.

There are currently no approved drugs or vaccinations against the Marburg virus.
