Spritea soda produced by the Coca-Cola Company, decided to retire from plastic bottles the distinctive green they have used for over 60 years.
The Coca-Cola Company said green plastic bottles will be converted to clear plastic from August 1 as part of the company’s environmental responsibility.
The reason is that Sprite’s green plastic bottles contain green polyethylene terephthalate (PET), an additive that cannot be recycled into new bottles. Meanwhile, the company is trying to reduce plastic waste.

“Removing the color (green) from bottles will improve the quality of recycled materials,” said R3CYCLE CEO Julian Ochoa, the plastics group that helps the Coca-Cola Company increase recycling efforts. CNN BusinessThursday (28/7).
“When recycled, Sprite clear PET bottles can be remade into bottles. This will help drive a circular economy for plastics,” continued Ochoa.
Going forward, customers will see a changed logo and packaging design on the Sprite bottles. Although, the famous green hue on the Sprite label will still be used.
Not only Sprite, other sodas that use green bottles under the Coca-Cola Company, namely Fresca, Seagram’s, Mello Yello, will also be replaced with clear plastic containers in the coming months.
The giant soda and sugary drinks are often criticized for their contribution to plastic waste that is damaging the environment.
In 2020, the Coca-Cola Company was named the number 1 plastic polluter in the world by environmental company Break Free From Plastic.
The soda giant’s logo and branding were found on 13,834 pieces of used plastic in 51 countries, and in public spaces, such as parks and beaches.
In fact, in 2018, the Coca-Cola Company announced a zero-waste world initiative. As part of the initiative, new bottles are made from 100 recycled plastic bottles.
The Coca-Cola Company projects this innovation could reduce about 20 million pounds of new plastic waste compared to 2019.
