British rail traffic is in chaos; workers are on strike again

A month after Britain’s biggest strike in 30 years, around 40,000 British rail workers are taking part in a new strike on Wednesday.

The strikers are demanding better pay and working conditions.

During the strike, only a fifth of the trains are running, creating traffic chaos, especially during the hour. Many public transport passengers stayed at home.

The London subway and buses are running as usual, but the high-speed train company “Eurostar” has reduced the number of flights, although its employees are not participating in the strike.

Mick Lynch, general secretary of the rail union RMT, insists the strikes are necessary because pay rises are not keeping pace with annual inflation in Britain, which is currently 9.4% but is forecast to rise.

The union informs that the operator of the railway network “Network Rail” has not improved its previous offer for a salary increase and the railway companies have not made a new offer either.

In June, a three-day strike organized by the RMT almost paralyzed the rail network in Great Britain.

Railway traffic in the country is expected to resume on Thursday morning.

Inflation, the highest in 40 years and continuing to rise, and a cost-of-living crisis are central issues in the race between Foreign Minister Lisa Tras and former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak to succeed Prime Minister Boris Johnson as leader of the Conservative Party.
