Many Covid patients experience symptoms of brain fog, what is it?

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia Fever, cough, and flu are common symptoms of Covid-19 infection. However, in addition, neurological symptoms that affect the brain and nervous system are also experienced by about 25 percent of Covid patients.

Called brain fog aka brain fog, this is one of the neurological symptoms commonly reported by COVID-19 patients. In some cases, brain fog can last months after the illness has passed.

Citing Healthline, brain fog is not really a medical diagnosis. On the other hand, brain fog is a general term used to describe a condition in which a person feels mentally slow.

Symptoms of brain fog can include:

  • memory problem
  • hard to concentrate
  • headache
  • confusion
  • mentally lethargic

A January 2021 study found there were increased levels of inflammatory cytokines in the fluid surrounding the brains of Covid survivors, weeks after the illness had passed. Cytokines are molecules produced by the immune system that promote inflammation.

Inflammation in your brain inhibits the ability of neurons to communicate with each other. Experts suspect this is one factor that contributes to brain fog.

How long does brain fog last?

It remains unclear how long brain fog usually lasts after COVID-19. Some people report brain fog that persists for weeks or months after their respiratory symptoms have disappeared.

A study published in December 2020 found that about 28 percent of people have concentration problems that last more than 100 days after being hospitalized for COVID-19.

In another study, researchers found that of a group of 60 patients who had recovered from COVID-19, 55 percent of them still had neurological symptoms 3 months after their illness.

To date, the best treatment for brain fog caused by COVID-19 is to adopt healthy habits, including adequate sleep, eating a nutritious diet, exercising regularly, and avoiding alcohol and cigarettes.
