NASA Uploads Photos of Pluto’s Surface in Rainbow Colors

NASA explains that Pluto doesn’t actually have a rainbow of colors.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – The American Space Agency (NASA) uploaded a colorful picture Pluto on Instagram account, last week (19/7/2022). The photo is a color rendering of Pluto’s heart taken by the mission New Horizons in 2015.

Fake color photographs of target objects are sometimes created by astronomers to draw attention to small variations in the topography or composition of the atmosphere. NASA explains that Pluto doesn’t actually have a rainbow of colors.

This color-translated image was produced by New Horizons scientists to emphasize the many small hue variations between different regions of the dwarf planet.

Pluto’s surface is complex and diverse. Between the old, heavily cratered topography and the new flat and frozen plains are mountains. The New Horizons mission launched on January 19, 2006. New Horizons studied Pluto and its moons for six months during a summer 2015 flyby. The spacecraft is moving further into the Kuiper belt as it continues to study the distant solar system.
