Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro reiterated his opposition on Monday to economic sanctions against Russia, in order to ensure the supply of Russian fertilizers to the Brazilian agri-food sector.
“We are not going to join the sanctions (against Russia). We maintain a balanced position, because without Brazil’s balance on this issue today, we would not have fertilizer for our agri-food sector” , Bolsonaro said at the 2022 Global Agribusiness Forum held in Sao Paulo.
The president defended the decision to maintain trade relations with Russia to guarantee food production.
“Without fertilizer, our guarantee of food security and that of a billion people around the world would be at risk,” he added.
Mr. Bolsonaro also recalled that last December his government decided to expand the national fertilizer program in order to find other solutions to imports.
