Batman, Captain America… Rain of comics to come for superheroes

After three years of absence, the comic book high mass is making a comeback! If Marvel Entertainment has made a big splash with all its announcements for the future of the MCU, we must not forget the sources of all its adaptations: comic books. Many paper series have been announced, here are the ones you shouldn’t miss. For the health of your wallet, this list is (of course) not exhaustive.

Cold War : an event bringing together the two Captain America in preparation

It is to be expected, the success of the MCU obliges, the comics catalog tends to be modeled on the cinema releases, just to capitalize on the films to attract readers. The two Captain Americas? Yes yes. If, in the MCU, Sam Wilson (camped by Anthony Mackie) took over the shield for a new film, in the comics, he shares his title with the original Captain: Steve Rogers. The two soldiers have their own series which evolves in parallel: Captain America : Symbol of Truth for Sam Wilson and Captain America : Sentinel of Liberty pour Steve Rogers.

Taking care not to divulge the plot of the two runs, the Maison des Idées announced an event: Cold War, which will bring together the two wearers of the costume. The story should take us back to the origins of the creation of the shield and reveal different secrets about the super-soldier. A first visual produced by Paco Medina has been unveiled for this event, which will land on newsstands in 2023.

A new creative team for the Fantastic Four?

The first family of superheroes had made a comeback in the pages of Marvel in 2018, after the takeover of Fox by the company with the big ears and the obtaining of the cinematographic rights of the quartet, and is going to meet a new era. Dan Slott, who had taken over the title, should leave the series in November 2022 and a new creative team will write and draw the adventures of the Fantastic Four.

After an announcement of a cinematic reboot of the team scheduled for 2024 within the MCU, the Fantastic Four are experiencing renewed interest: the opportunity to do some teasing on the new creative team of the title. With a compass posted on the networks and indicating the north for the screenwriter and the south for the designer, the rumors are in full swing. Ryan North and Matthew Southworth could be elected. But for now, that’s just speculation.

Chris Claremont leading screenwriter X-Men is back !

legendary architect of X-Men from the 1970s to the 1990s, readers kept asking for his return, it’s done. Chris Claremont returns in November 2022 for a miniseries X-Treme X-men with the artist Salvador Larroca. A shock duo to resume their series which had been published between 2001 and 2004.

Notice to nostalgic fans, the composition of this branch of X-Men is the same as in 2004: Wolverine returns accompanied by Kitty Pride or Tornado. Characters that readers can find in the sequel to the animated series X-Men from 1992, which returns to Disney+ in 2023 as X-Men 97.

Gotham City Year Onea return to basics

As soon as its rival makes an announcement, DC Comics must respond. And as usual, the adventures of the dark knight and his universe are the engine of the publishing house, which is struggling to keep up with Marvel.

Who has never dreamed of knowing the fall of Gotham, before Batman comes to save it with blows of broken jaws and broken bones? Tom King and Phil Ester will return to this era with a mini-series: Gotham City Year One next October. A highly anticipated title, in particular because of the presence of Tom King in the script.

Accustomed to the adventures of the Dark Knight, the DC Comics superstar had delivered an 85-issue run on Batman and a Batman/Catwoman maxi-series that had impressed readers with its quality. This only bodes well for this series inspired by film noir and detective thrillers, atmospheres perfectly suited to a story about Gotham City.

Retinal fractures planned for the origin story on the Riddler scripted by Paul Dano

If a character marked the public of the Batman by his service, it is well the Riddler of Paul Dano. The actor announced last March that he would write a series in six issues to tell the origins of the killer, a series drawn by Stevan Subic, a Croatian illustrator little known across the Atlantic.

The first boards were unveiled at Comic-Con and the least we can say is that they are breathtaking. Very inspired by the style of Andrea Sorrentino (designer of a Batman very close to that of Pattinson in Batman : The Imposter), and Bill Sienkiewicz (artist behind the visual masterstroke that is Elektra Assassin), these Riddler boards only promise good things. Patrol the streets of Gotham

What is the life of a policeman like in the city of the Dark Knight? This is the question that the series answers Gotham Central. The adventures of the GCPD cops will resume in the miniseries Gotham Central : The Blue Wall to be published in October 2022. We will follow Renée Montoya, who has become the new commissioner of the most dangerous city in the world, who must restore the forces of order and restore the population’s confidence in the police, something not easy .

In the script for this series, we will find John Ridley (author of 12 Years a Slave), so it is unlikely that this is a pro cop story. In this series drawn by Stefano Raffaele, the GCPD is more likely to be confronted with the current criticisms made against the police, especially across the Atlantic.

Love for the boy from hell

If the comic book market is largely dominated by the Big Two, Marvel and DC Comics, it is important not to forget the independent houses which often offer stories that break free from the superheroic shackles common to the two mastodons.

Arguably one of the best-known indie comic book characters, Hellboy will meet love in a miniseries to be released in October 2022. Supervised by Mike Mignola, the creator of the monster detective, written by Christopher Golden and drawn by Matt Smith, this series will be an opportunity to introduce the character of Anastasia Brainsfield, the ex-girlfriend of the horned detective who had only appeared in a novel scripted by Golden. This five-issue miniseries continues to explore the various moments in Hellboy’s life, an endeavor started by the Young Hellboy series and which appears to be paying off for publishing house Dark Horse, which owns the license.

Another Stan Lee project

Even four years after his death, it is impossible to do without his ideas (or his name which is always a harbinger of good sales). Dynamite Entertainment has decided to draw on the ideas of Marvel’s flagship screenwriter and announced in a press release the publication of a graphic novel on the sci-fi audio novel franchise.
