The Sichuan pepper is ripe here in southwest China. A strong scent reminiscent of mint wafts between the rows of fallen trees.
But the farmers are worried. The price of the pods, which make chili sauce pungent and spice up other Chinese food, is in free fall this year. Corona shutdowns with subsequent financial losses have caused diners here to tighten their wallets.
