While the world struggles with strong price growth, China has the opposite problem

CHENGDU (The Washington Post): While the rest of the world is struggling with steep price increases, the Chinese are worried that prices are going down. A strong pepper takes the temperature of the country’s economy.

The Sichuan pepper is ripe here in southwest China. A strong scent reminiscent of mint wafts between the rows of fallen trees.

But the farmers are worried. The price of the pods, which make chili sauce pungent and spice up other Chinese food, is in free fall this year. Corona shutdowns with subsequent financial losses have caused diners here to tighten their wallets.
