Multi-instrumentalist, composer, singer, Vittorio De Scalzi was born in Genoa on November 4, 1949. In the 60s he founded the Trolls with Pino Scarpettini, recording the single ‘Behind the fog’. In the same year he made his debut as a soloist, with ‘Forbidden to those older than a few years’, using the pseudonym Napoleon.
In 1967, the experience of the Trolls ended, he founded the New Trolls with Nico Di Palo, Gianni Belleno, Giorgio D’Adamo and Mauro Chiarugi. With the collaboration of Fabrizio De André and the poet Riccardo Mannerini he composes the songs of the first album by New Trolls, the concept album ‘Senza tempo senza Bandiera’. He then signs many of the group’s hit songs, from ‘Visions’ to ‘Una mine’, to ‘Quella carzza della sera’, alongside his passion for progressive rock with research on traditional Genoese music. With the New Trolls – disbanded in 1997 – he publishes twelve albums and participates in seven editions of the Sanremo Festival, but also collaborates with Sergio Bardotti, Mina, Ornella Vanoni, Anna Oxa.
In 2021 he wins the Tenco award as artist of the year and publishes a box set celebrating his career, Once upon a time I played in the New Trolls. In 2022 he appears in the docofilm ‘The new Genoese school’, written and conceived by Claudio Cabona, which compares rappers such as Izi, Tedua, Bresh, Nader, Disme, Guesan, Vaz Tè and Ill Rave, protagonists of the new music scene, Genoese with the generation of songwriters that preceded them.
