Vingegaard won the Tour de France! Pogačar finished second

Philipsen claimed his second victory at this year’s Tour after 116 kilometers. For the prestigious triumph on the Champs-Élysées, he finished ahead of the Dutchman Dylan Groenewegen, while the Norwegian Alexander Kristoff was third. The members of Vingegaard’s team did not fight for the first place, they crossed the finish line together celebrating in the main field.

Vingegaard took his first Grand Tour victory. Last year he still finished second behind Pogačar on the Old Lady, but this year he repeated the triumph of compatriot Bjarne Riis from 1996. Last week, in the mountain 11th stage, Vingegaard took advantage of a weaker day of the reigning two-time champion Pogačar and stripped him of the yellow jersey, which then, with the help of his top defended the team.

He definitively confirmed the victory in Saturday’s time trial, in which he beat Pogačar by eight seconds and was just short of teammate Wout van Aert. The Belgian was another big personality of this year’s Tour: Vingegaard’s key helper took care of three of the six stage championships of the Jumbo-Visma team, and he dominated the points competition. In addition to the most prestigious yellow jersey, Vingegaard won the dotted jersey for the best climber, Pogačar defended the white jersey for the best young rider.

The start of the last stage was, as usual, in a festive spirit. For the first kilometers after the start in the trendy Défense district of Paris, the peloton rode at a slow pace, jersey holders posed for photographers and members of the Jumbo-Visma stable clinked champagne as they drove.

The pace of the race increased significantly only after arriving in the center of Paris. Five kilometers before the finish line, on the climb to the Arc de Triomphe, the sprinter teams preparing for the mass finish were surprised by the arrival of Pogačar and Thomas, but their attack did not last long. Philipsen, who was second behind Van Aaert last year on the Champs-Élysées, managed to take the prized victory.
