This time the heat wave caused a fire to hit Greece. The country on Sunday battled three wildfires across the country that forced hundreds of people to flee, as soaring temperatures raised fears of more fires.
The country is in the grip of a heatwave that started on Saturday and is expected to last for 10 days. Temperatures are set to rise to 42 degrees Celsius (107 degrees Fahrenheit) in some areas.
Fires are raging in the north, east and south of Greece, including on the island of Lesbos. Officials ordered the evacuation of about 200 people on Sunday afternoon from the village of Vryssa on Lesbos as the fire drew closer, about 500 meters (1,600 feet) from houses, the deputy mayor of west Lesbos told radio Skai.
In the northeastern region of Evros, wildfires blazed for a fourth day in Dadia National Park, known for its black vulture colonies.
The fires have destroyed nearly 500 hectares (1,220 hectares) of forest. More than 300 firefighters struggled to control the blaze in Evros and on Saturday night thick smoke forced the evacuation of the village of Dadias.
It is not clear how many people were evacuated. “The most important thing for us is the safety of the villagers and all the troops (which) will be deployed there,” Evros Governor Dimitris Petrovits told the Athens News Agency.
Fires in parts of France, Spain and Portugal have burned more land so far this year than the fires destroyed in 2021. The area, about 517,881 hectares, is the size of Trinidad and Tobago.
