T-Mobile breached the data of 77 million customers. He will pay dearly for this

T-Mobile has agreed to pay $ 500 million to settle a class action lawsuit for breach of the personal data of approximately 77 million US residents. The operator will allocate $ 350 million to the conciliation fund and $ 150 million to “data security and related technology.”

Collective lawsuit against the operator concerns the burglary of 2021, as a result of which personal data of about 76.6 million “current, former and potential customers” were breached from the United States. According to the proposed contract, T-Mobile is bound to put $ 350 million in a settlement fund for lawyers, fees and data breaches. The operator is also required to spending $ 150 million on “data security and related technology in 2022 and 2023. In total, T-Mobile must pay 500 million dollars.

T-Mobile explained that the person responsible for hacking the operator’s network used “specialized” tools and knowledge of its infrastructure to gain access to the test environment. That person then stole customer data and sold it on hacking forums. T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert admitted the breach and apologized to those whose data was compromised.

The type of information an entity has sold varies from person to person, but can include name, date of birth, and social security number victims of the attack. T-Mobile contacted those affected by the data leak shortly after it came to light and offered them two free years of access to McAfee ID Theft Protection.

Now they will also be compensated in cash, although it will probably be a few dollars at most. While the amount of $ 350 million may sound significant, a large proportion of that amount will be used to cover legal costs.
