“The French authorities haven’t put enough people on the border,” said Liz Truss.
Port chief executive Doug Bannister initially also blamed the lack of staff at the French border post. But he also acknowledged that after Brexit, there will be additional time needed to check the administrative data of passing travelers.
The same thing was said by a member of parliament French Pierre-Henri Dumont. He said the travel chaos was a result of Brexit.
“We have to run more checks than ever before,” Dumont said.
Despite admitting it, Bannister also said that the port’s capacity had actually been increased. He believes the port can handle traffic during peak holiday periods.
This port density occurred on Friday (22/7/2022). This congestion is expected to continue to increase over the weekend.
“We processed about 8,500 cars out (Friday). Today we predict around 10,000,” Bannister told BBC radio. AFP.
At 07.00 local time, P&O Ferries informs travelers to prepare at least three to four hours to reach the port and complete the entire series of checks.
However, on Friday alone many had to wait for more than six hours.
“We believe there are around 3,000 heavily loaded vehicles stuck on the M20,” said Kent region leader Roger Gough.
Overcrowding eased after more staff were brought in by the border agency French. However, Gough said the general situation remained ‘very serious’.
He explained that the problem was that the port had a very high volume of passengers. In addition, it is also very clear that there is a buildup of heavy-laden vehicles.
Congestion at the port does not only occur during the holiday period. The port of Dover has also been an area that has experienced frequent congestion since Britain left the European Union in January last year.
