Bundesliga club Werder Bremen clearly won the first of two friendlies in just one day. The promoted team won 6-1 (3-1) against FC Groningen from the Netherlands.
Like the test against Twente Enschede a week earlier, this game was initially canceled due to safety concerns and was then allowed to take place in camera on a side pitch of the Weser Stadium.
In the first half, attacker Marvin Ducksch (13th/16th minute) and newcomer Lee Buchanan (37th) scored after Bremen were 1-0 down (9th). After a foul on Leonardo Bittencourt in the penalty area, Niclas Füllkrug converted a penalty (51st) and increased shortly afterwards (54th). Almost ten minutes later, Ducksch also scored Bremen’s sixth goal with a penalty.
Only 30 minutes before kick-off, Bremen had publicly announced the match. The game was originally supposed to take place in Delmenhorst in front of spectators. The reason for the cancellation was Bremen’s second test match against Groninger Liga rivals FC Emmen, which was postponed to Saturday at 5 p.m. The authorities wanted to prevent two Dutch fan groups in the region.
