REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, GENEVA — The World Health Organization (WHO) declared an epidemic monkey pox or monkeypox is an extraordinary situation that now qualifies as a global emergency. The outbreak is reported to have spread to more than 70 countries.

For this condition, this international body said that more efforts were needed to deal with it. Action is needed to treat diseases that have occurred in the past and possibly create a scramble for vaccines.

Reported from Al Arabiya, Saturday (7/23/2022), although monkeypox has been found in parts of central and West Africa for decades, monkeypox is not known to trigger major outbreaks outside the continent. While by now it had spread widely among people until May, when authorities detected dozens of epidemics in Europe, North America and elsewhere.

WHO emphasizes, declares the situation global emergency means monkeypox epidemic is an extraordinary event that could spread to more countries. This condition requires a coordinated global response.

Last June, cases due to monkeypox and orthopoxvirus infection had reached 200 cases in the United States. Experts warn the virus is mutating more than expected.

Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that the majority of cases are in California, New York, and Illinois. Meanwhile, Kentucky health officials announced the state’s first possible case. However, scientists note the outbreak has the potential to grow to be much larger than the current number of cases.
