Understanding Exhaust Emissions and How to Suppress Them – The Phrase

ThePhrase.id – Motorized vehicles that use an engine or ICE must emit exhaust gases from the rest of the combustion which are called exhaust emissions. These emissions have a major effect on increasing air pollution, so it is harmful to the environment both in the short term and in the long term.

The residue from the combustion contains hazardous substances that have a negative impact on the environment, so that it can endanger human health.

The substances contained in it include:

  • Carbon monoxide (CO): a gas that has no odor and color, but is toxic when inhaled by humans
  • Carbon dioxide (CO2): a gas that has a negative impact on the earth, especially on global warming
  • nitrous oxide (NOX): gas that causes sore eyes and interferes with the respiratory tract
  • Hydrocarbon (HC): gas from incomplete combustion, there are still remnants of unburned gasoline vapor and exit through the exhaust

Some of the bad effects of emissions for humans:

1. Damage the respiratory system

The first part of the body affected by these emissions is the breath. The danger is that the body will find it more difficult to breathe and the emissions that accumulate in the lungs can cause asthma, to lung cancer. Oxygen in the body will also decrease because CO is more easily bound by red blood cells.

2. Damage the circulatory system

Increased levels of CO in the blood that enter due to exposure to emissions will increase blood viscosity and levels of inflammatory proteins. As a result, the body will respond by way of inflammation or inflammation. If it occurs in a long time will get worse and damage to blood vessels.

3. It is carcinogenic

What is carcinogenic? Carcinogenicity is the nature of substances that can trigger cancer and organ damage in the human body. Substances that exist in exhaust gas emissions and are carcinogenic are lead and benzene.

Lead is dangerous because it can settle on the surface of any object and if it interacts with the skin it can cause impaired brain performance. While inhaled benzene can interfere with the formation of red blood cells.

So, what can users of vehicles with engines that emit exhaust gas do if they can’t switch to vehicles that are more environmentally friendly?

Well, exhaust gas has standards that must be met so as not to damage the environment and endanger health. In Indonesia, the exhaust emission standard uses the Euro 4 emission standard as of April 2021. That way, every vehicle that emits emissions must meet the standards that have been set.

To find out, motor vehicle emission tests have now been encouraged to be carried out by motorized vehicle owners. This emission test can be carried out in workshops, emission test kiosks, emission test vehicles (mobile), to the Environmental Service Office. It costs around IDR 150,000 to IDR 200,000.

In addition to conducting emission tests, there is something else that can be done, namely by reducing exhaust emissions. The method is as follows:

  1. Perform periodic service so that the parts that need to be replaced do not emit emissions that are more damaging to the environment
  2. Pay attention to the fuel line and air filter, keep them clean because if they are dirty it can affect the hydrocarbon levels
  3. Check oxygen sensor
  4. Check the condition of the engine cooling and lubricating system
  5. Check the condition of the catalic converter in the exhaust because its job is to convert emissions into clean air
  6. Check the condition of coils and spark plugs regularly
  7. Using fuel according to engine specifications
