Seeler persistently refused lucrative offers from rich European clubs and remained loyal to Hamburg for 28 years. Obvan Kanonr helped the club to the German title in 1960 after 32 years. He played a total of 477 matches in the league, in the 1963/64 season he was the best scorer with 30 goals.

Seeler thus left a significant mark in the West German native team, with whom he played at those world championships. In addition to the silver medal from England, where the Germans did not stand up to the home team in the final, he also led the national team to a bronze medal in Mexico in 1970 as captain.

The three-time best footballer in West Germany became the president of Hamburg in 1995 after finishing his career. But he had to resign because of a financial scandal for which he assumed responsibility, even though he was not personally involved in it. Since 2005, there is a statue in front of the HSV stadium.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Twitter that the country mourned the death of Uwe. For many, he was a role model, a football legend and a self-evident fan of Hamburg. I had the opportunity to give speeches on his 80th birthday. We all want to be like n Uwe – confident and humble. We will miss him, Scholz wrote.

National team coach Hansi Flick singled out Seeler as a role model for generations of national team players. With his humble demeanor, he inspired people outside the hit and won over them. We always thought of him. Take us in national darkness and the union will miss a lot, Flick said in a statement. His name is the club’s symbol of fidelity and loyalty, he added.

According to the president of the association, Bernd Neuendorf, Seeler will be missed by the whole of German football. We lost one of the best footballers Germany ever had. After Fritz Walter, he was our second Estonian captain, the idol of the generation, a true role model. Many of his goals are memorable, he said.

Seeler’s football genes were inherited by his grandson Levin Ztunali, who went through Bundesliga teams Bayer Leverkusen, Werder Bremen and Moha 05. He now plays for Union Berlin.
