United States: Joe Biden issues a warning cry on global warming

UNITED STATES – While Europe faces a heat wave breaking many temperature records, on the other side of the Atlantic, Joe Biden warns of the irreparable and imminent damage of global warming this Wednesday, July 20.

Climate change is “a clear and immediate danger” as well as an “existential threat to our nation and the world”, thus launched the American president during a symbolic visit to Somerset in Massachusetts, on the scene of a former highly polluting coal-fired power plant, in the process of being converted to wind energy.

“The health of our fellow citizens is at stake”, as well as “our national security” and “our economy”, he added during this speech under a blazing sun to try to relaunch his climate promises in a context where the 46th President of the United States finds himself paralyzed in Congress and limited by the Supreme Court.

“As president, I have a responsibility to act with urgency and resolve when our nation faces a clear and present danger, and that is what climate change is,” the 79-year-old Democrat said. .

“My message today is loud and clear: Since Congress is not acting on the climate emergency, I will. And in the coming weeks, my administration will begin announcing executive actions to address this emergency,” he also tweeted.

New measures announced during the summer

But he has not – at least for the moment – declared a “state of climate emergency” as some elected members of his party are calling for, a maneuver whose impact is not very clear but which could grant him additional political powers.

“The president has a number of authorities he can use and he’s going to work on those and make those announcements,” his national climate adviser Gina McCarthy told CNN. “You will see them unfold over the next few weeks.”

The president intends to progress “at his own pace”, she adds. Among the executive orders he is expected to unveil: additional funds to help protect regions facing extreme heat and measures to boost wind power generation in the United States.

“My friends, when I think of climate change, I think of jobs. Jobs to build wind turbines on the coast. Jobs making the pylons that anchor offshore wind farms to the seabed. Well-paying, unionized jobs that are here to stay,” he gave as the first concrete examples for Americans on Twitter.

The day before, John Kirby, in charge of coordinating Joe Biden’s communication on strategic issues, insisted that climate change was a matter of “national security” which “affects our infrastructure”. As such, the Biden administration says it is determined to meet its climate commitments, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Joe Biden, who returned to the Paris climate accord left by his predecessor Donald Trump, announced in April 2021 that the United States would cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50-52% by 2030 , compared to 2005.
