When the China correspondent Matthias Kamp recently spoke to some of his acquaintances, he quickly realized that they were in the middle of planning to leave China. No isolated cases, as he says. Young, educated and cosmopolitan Chinese no longer see any opportunities in their country and their own future more abroad. There are many reasons for that. What broke the camel’s back was Head of State Xi Jinping’s strict zero-Covid strategy: On the day when the central government once again emphasized in early April that it was sticking to the strategy, search queries on the Chinese Internet for the term “emigration » by 440 percent.

In addition to the tough course in Corona policy, censorship and the increasingly strict education policy are serious reasons why more and more young people want to leave China.

“But leaving China is becoming increasingly difficult,” says Matthias Kamp in the new episode of “NZZ Akzent”. The Chinese authorities no longer issue the necessary passports. In the case of Chinese re-entering the country from abroad, even the passports are currently stamped invalid. The government justifies the measures with the protection against possible imported corona infections. In truth, the government is raising the fence around the country and wants to isolate itself more and more from the rest of the world.
