Offenbach/Hannover (dpa/lni) – According to preliminary data, the previous heat record has been broken in Lower Saxony. In Barsinghausen-Hohenbostel (Hanover region), 40.0 degrees Celsius were measured on Wednesday, as the German Weather Service (DWD) announced in the evening. The temperature in the federal state has never been higher since weather recording began. The previous record of 39.6 degrees was measured on July 25, 2019 in Dörpen (Emsland district).
Around a dozen of all measuring stations in Lower Saxony reported temperatures of over 39 degrees during the day, as a meteorologist from the DWD said. The smallest federal state of Bremen reached a peak of 37.0 degrees.
The DWD emphasized on Wednesday evening that the values are provisional, but will no longer be updated that evening. They will be checked in the coming days and, if necessary, will be specified after a few days.
New high temperatures were also measured in some other federal states on Wednesday.
