Now it is up to the Conservative Party’s 200,000 members to choose which of them will be elected. The election results will be announced on 5 September.
In addition to becoming party leader, whoever emerges victorious will also become the country’s prime minister after Boris Johnson. He announced earlier in July that he will step down as soon as the party has chosen a successor.
Just after 4pm, Sir Graham Brady read out the result of the vote:
Sunak got 137 votes, while Truss got 113. Penny Morduant got 105 votes, and is thus out of the leadership race.
