NASA hopes to learn more about the effects of dark matter with the help of the new space telescope. According to astrophysicists, most of the universe is made up of this matter, but so far humanity has not been able to perceive it. In addition, the telescope must investigate distant exoplanets (planets in other galaxies).

The space telescope has been in the works for a while. Previously called the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST), the device is now named after NASA astronomer Nancy Grace Roman, who died in 2018.

She played an important role in the development of large space telescopes. Because of her involvement with the Hubble Space Telescope (the predecessor of the James Webb Telescope), she was also known as the “Mother of Hubble.”
