World of Warcraft players will return to Azeroth this year. Some of the players are doing that to witness the return of the dragons in Dragon Flight, but not all World of Warcraft fans will find the new expansion this year’s highlight. After wreaking havoc on Draenor in The Burning Crusade expansion, World of Warcraft Classic players are eagerly awaiting the release of World of Warcraft Classic: Wrath of the Lich King. The third expansion for World of Warcraft originally appeared in 2008 and is considered by many to be the pinnacle of the game.
Arthas and his army of undead
The popularity of Wrath of the Lich King has to do with, among other things, the antagonist of the expansion: the Lich King. The character from Blizzard’s rts games is the perfect prince Arthas who becomes the ultimate villain. The name Arthas also resonates in the expansions after Wrath of the Lich King and his storyline only comes to an end in the last expansion, Shadowlands. It’s an absolutely iconic figure from the Warcraft universe, so it’s no surprise that World of Warcraft fans want to replay this expansion.
That should happen sometime in the coming months. While everyone was busy defeating Illidan and the Burning Legion, on Azeroth Arthas has gone wild as Lich King and his army of undead threatens to overrun the continents. Now most of the top players were already hanging out on Sunwell Plateau in the far north of the Eastern Kingdoms, where The Burning Crusade expansion’s final raid opened last May, so most raiders will be more than ready to take on the scourge. The return of Arthas is scheduled for “sometime” this year and while playing the beta we got a first impression of how far Blizzard is with Wrath of the Lich King Classic.
