Slovak hockey defenseman Andrej Sekera ended his active career at the age of 36. He said this in an interview with the Sportnet portal.

Sekera played the past three seasons with the Dallas Stars in the NHL, after the last one his contract expired and he is convinced that he will not extend his career. “I didn’t want to chase another season. My hockey career is over. I received some offers as a free agent, but I decided to end it anyway. A lot weighed on the fact that my son had health problems for the last year.” he said.

In an interview with Sportnet, he explained that the main reason was the family situation. “After everything we’ve been through, I realized that it would be best for me to focus on my family. I thought it would somehow break over the summer, but it didn’t. Nothing will convince me one hundred percent anymore.” he added for the portal.

Sekera started his career in Dukla Trenčín, in 2004 he was drafted by the Buffalo Sabers from the 71st place (3rd round). He made the first team three years later and played a total of seven seasons with Buffalo. Later he worked in Carolina, Los Angeles, Edmonton and most recently in Dallas.

He played a total of 842 games in the NHL regular season and collected 253 points (51+202), added 46 starts in the playoffs with two goals and three assists. He played in the Stanley Cup final with Dallas in the 2019/20 season. In 2012, he won silver at the World Championships in Helsinki, started in a total of eight championships, and appeared twice at the Olympic Games. He played in the European team at the World Cup, where he also won silver.
