Monkey pox | The EU buys more than 50 thousand vaccines after an increase in cases of monkeypox | Vaccine | NMR | WORLD

The European Commission announced on Monday the purchase of 54,530 additional doses of the monkeypox vaccine, concerned about an increase in cases of “close to 50%” in the European Union (EU) in a week.

With this new purchase, within the framework of the contract that the UE has with the Danish laboratory Bavarian Nordic, the number of doses acquired for the block amounts to 163,620, according to the European Executive in a statement.

The EU Health Commissioner, Stella Kyriakides, said she was “concerned about the increasing number of cases of monkeypox in the EU”.

“We now have more than 7,000 cases in the EU, that is, an increase of about 50% since last week,” he pointed.

Europe is the most affected region in the world by monkeypox with more than 7,000 confirmed cases as of July 14, according to figures from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

The Emergency Committee of the OMS it is due to meet on Thursday to determine how to control the outbreak.

Known in humans since 1970, this disease is considered much less dangerous and contagious than smallpox, eradicated in 1980.

It manifests with flu-like symptoms and skin rashes and usually heals on its own after two to three weeks.
