A Ukrainian cargo plane with an unknown cargo crashed near Kavala in northern Greece on Saturday, so the scene will be inspected by a drone on Sunday.
Greek state television said that experts from the army, explosives and the Hellenic Atomic Energy Commission would inspect the site with a drone before sending experts there because of concerns that the cargo could be toxic.
The “Antonov An-12” plane crashed on Saturday evening near the village of Palaiokhori, the firemen informed.
Videos published by eyewitnesses on social networks show that the plane was engulfed in flames when it hit the ground, but it was already burning before reaching the ground.
On Saturday evening, people living within a radius of two kilometers around the crash site were asked to stay at home and wear face masks.
On Sunday, two firefighters were taken to the hospital, who had difficulty breathing due to the toxic fumes.
Eyewitnesses said that the plane was on fire and there were explosions.
According to the media, the plane was on its way from Serbia to Jordan, and the pilot reported engine problems and requested permission to make an emergency landing at the nearby Kavala airport, but crashed 40 kilometers from it.
There is no official confirmation of the number of people on the plane, but the Greek state television ERT reported that there were eight people and 12 tons of “dangerous cargo” on the Ukrainian plane.
A firefighter told reporters that initial information indicated that the plane had ammunition.
The plane crashed two kilometers from the settlement.
