Cargo plane crashes in northern Greece, explosions sound

Firefighters reported a cargo plane crashed near Paleochori Kavalas, northern Greece, Saturday evening local time. Witnesses who were in the vicinity said that after the plane crashed and caught fire, an explosion was heard.

Local officials said 15 firefighters and seven fire engines had been dispatched to the crash site. Officers were unable to approach because the explosion was in progress.

According to media reports, the cargo plane was traveling from Serbia to Jordan and had requested permission to make an emergency landing at the nearby Kavala airport. But failed to achieve it.

State-owned television ERT reported that it was a Ukrainian Antonov plane, which villagers said was on fire before it crashed.

There was no official information on the number of people on board the plane, which was still burning according to live footage broadcast on state television. But media reports said the plane had a crew of three.
