24 years after its creation, Notre Dame de Paris arrived on Broadway for the first time.
The New York public discovers in French subtitled the adventures of the beautiful and coveted Esmeralda.
Before New York, the musical has already been performed in 23 countries and in nine languages.
Richard Cocciante, composer of Notre-Dame de Paris: “Being here is a new experience of course, it is to try, with humility, to return to this country, because it is not a country that normally accepts easily trespassed, especially in this area of Broadway.”
The musical is a worldwide success: between 8 and 9 million spectators saw Notre Dame de Paris play around the world.
“I knew all the songs and the lyrics, I didn’t need the subtitles” smiled a delighted spectator. “It’s just phenomenal, we are very happy to see them in New York”
“It was even better than I expected, I’ll go see it again, and maybe even a third time” enthused a New Yorker leaving the room. “The actors are absolutely brilliant. They bring the story to life 100% as I imagined it. I was amazed by the performance.”
The Broadway premiere took place this week at Lincoln Center.
Twelve performances are scheduled.
