The CAS has rejected an appeal by the Russian Football Association and four clubs against being banned from European Cups due to the invasion of Ukraine. The court in Lausanne reported about it on the website.
Russian football thus failed in the second attempt at the arbitration with an appeal against the sanctions for the attack on Ukraine. Already in March, CAS confirmed the exclusion of the national team from qualifying for the World Cup.
Now the union, Zenit St. Petersburg, Sochi and Moscow clubs Dynamo and CSKA have all failed to appeal their elimination from the cups. CAS upheld UEFA, who justified the exclusion on security concerns.
“It is regrettable because neither the clubs nor the players bear any responsibility for the situation in Ukraine,” CAS said. “On the contrary, both UEFA and FIFA have suffered significant damage due to the decision, however, in our opinion, the sanctions are appropriate with regard to ensuring the safety and smooth running of the competitions,” added the arbitration.
