The Formula E World Championship is packing its bags in New York City this Saturday July 16 and Sunday July 17 for the 11th and 12th rounds of the season on the Red Hook circuit in the heart of Brooklyn.
Edoardo Mortara, the driver of the Venturi Racing team is at the top of the provisional classification, ahead of the double Champion, Jean-Éric Vergne of the DS Techeetah team, by 11 points. But, four pilots stand in 15 points!
Approaching the ‘double-header’ – two sleeves – of this weekend, four competitors in the Drivers’ and Teams’ World Championship look each other in the eye before tackling rounds 11 and 12 of the longest season since the launch year.
Edoardo Mortara (Venturi Racing)Jean-Eric Vergne (DS Techeetah), Stoffel Vandoorne (Mercedes) et Mitch Evans (Jaguar Racing) ahead of the rest of the driver field while their respective teams occupy exactly the same position in the standings.
Mortara took the lead in the Drivers’ World Championship at the previous race in Marrakech, with a third victory of the season after withstanding intense pressure from Vergne and da Costa, the duettists of DS Techeetah.
Jean-Éric Vergne is in second place and New York is the stage where the only double Formula E champion is doing particularly well after having sealed his two titles there in seasons 4 and 5, and a podium in 2018.
With his third place in Marrakech, Evans climbed for the fifth time on the podium and three victories this season. The Jaguar driver is definitely in the game for what could be a first title for Jaguar and the New Zealand driver.
Marrakesh was a test for Vandoorne, starting 20th on the grid after a disappointing qualifying session and before delivering a spectacular damage-limiting race performance. With eleven pure overtakings, the Belgian remains in the race for the title with precious points, as he finished eighth.
NEW YORK CITY E-PRIX
This is the fifth time that the Formula E World Championship has stopped over and passed through New York, one of the favorite rounds of drivers, teams and fans.
The 2,320 km, 14-turn circuit remains unchanged from its usual layout, with the backdrop of the iconic Lower Manhattan cityscape and the Statue of Liberty.
THE CLASSIFICATION OF THE RACE ON JULY 11, 2021
The circuit winds around the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in the heart of Brooklyn’s Red Hook neighborhood. Lined with unforgiving concrete, it’s a real test for pilots and engineers. The Attack Mode activation zone was modified last year and will be the case again this year. Initially at the exit of turn 5, she will again be in the hairpin of turn 10.
British Jaguar Racing driver Sam Bird is the Brooklyn Street Circuit’s most successful driver with three victories to his name, including a spectacular one-two in Formula E’s first visit to the ‘Big Apple’.
