Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has completed the purchase of Bungie, developer of Destiny 2 and various franchise titles Halo. The owner of the Playstation brand invested US$ 3.6 billion, about R_jobs(data.conteudo)nbsp;20 billion at the current price, in the acquisition.
The consolidation of the agreement, which was awaiting judicial authorization, was communicated on PlayStation’s social networks. “The deal for the acquisition of Bungie has been closed. Now we can officially say… Welcome to the PlayStation family, Bungie! Bungie becomes “an independent subsidiary” of SIE, managed by a board consisting of current CEO and President Pete Parsons and the rest of the studio’s current management team.
Bungie’s Future
Despite the purchase, Sony declared that the Bungie will remain a cross-platform studio. That is, games Destiny and other team productions should continue to be available on Xbox computers and consoles. Rumors even indicate that Bungie may be working on a mobile version of Destiny.
According to anonymous sources heard by The Game Post, Bungie may merge with NetEase Games (Diablo) to produce a new mobile game for the online action shooter franchise. According to rumors, the supposed Destiny mobile may have been in development for over two years and would be a first-person adventure set in the franchise’s universe.
Sony’s business strategy for the next few years includes bringing more PlayStation titles for desktop and mobile devices, as well as increasing investment in the production of games as a service, such as Destiny.
Bungie has already produced Xbox exclusives
This isn’t the first time Bungie has been bought by a publisher. In 2000, the Microsoft acquired the studio to work on sequels to the game series Halo. Bungie regained independence shortly after the release of Halo 3in October 2007, being in charge of the production of two more exclusive games of Halo: EPISODE e Halo: Reach. With the end of the partnership with Microsoft, Bungie signed a 10-year contract with Activisionwhich resulted in the creation of Destiny.
