Covidsmällen: England’s national team captain infected – DN.SE

Wiegman thus misses England’s last group match against Northern Ireland tonight, Friday, the English national team announces on its website.

“Wiegman will have distance contact with the players and leaders with the hope of returning to his role as soon as possible,” the statement said.

Assistant coach Arjan Veurink will lead England in the match against Northern Ireland.

52-year-old Wiegman, from the Netherlands, signed in August 2020 on a four-year contract with England after successful years as the national team captain for the Netherlands. The 52-year-old led, among other things, the Netherlands to European Championship gold in 2017 and World Cup final in 2019.

England started the European Championship by defeating Austria 1-0 before they won over Norway with a crushing 8-0 in the second group game, a major victory that is the biggest in the history of the European Championship.

England are already ready for the quarter-finals.

Sweden’s team captain Caroline Seger said this earlier this week:

– It is of course sad that it has become like this, that it (covid) has increased again. But it is not something we can walk around and think about, but we try to protect ourselves as best we can.

– It will be the same show now as the one you have become accustomed to, wash your hands even more and keep your distance. The restrictions are that we must not hug loved ones, and that we must keep our distance from supporters. We would like to be able to participate in the tournament and be healthy and fit all the way.
