MELBOURNE VICTORY – MANCHESTER UNITED 1-4:
It was the hosts who got off to the best start, despite Erik ten Hag choosing to start with the best players he had available.
Already after five minutes, Christopher Ikonomidis put the ball in goal after a beautiful play by Melbourne. The post came from United’s left side after passive defensive play by Victor Lindelöf, before Harry Maguire was run off by the Australian striker.
The home crowd provided a humorous touch when they started singing “you’re getting sacked in the morning” to ten Hag after Melbourne took the lead.

Manchester United took over the game completely after the goal, and had the ball in Melbourne’s half almost the entire round.
Just before the break, they also got a hole in the boil. A hard shot from Scott McTominay went straight into a Melbourne player and got a perfect arc over the goalkeeper and into goal.
Only a few minutes later, United were in front again. A brilliant save by Diogo Dalot resulted in a free kick that Anthony Elanga bent under the crossbar – 1 – 0!
During the break, United’s Dutch manager made ten substitutions. Only the experienced last chance Tom Heaton came out of the locker room.
Marcus Rashford was given a chance to change things around. With 78 minutes played, the visitors broke through on the right after some poor defending.

Rashford was close to his second goal after a brilliant post by new signing Tyrell Malacia, but the header was a little too weak to outsmart Paul Izzo in the Melbourne cage.
At the end of the match, United scored their fourth goal. A post from Tahith Chong hit a Melbourne player who controlled the ball in his own net.
Five minutes before the end, the former United star Nani made his debut for Melbourne Victory. He played for the club from 2007 to 2014.
