Salar de Uyuni, in Bolivia near the border with Chile, is the largest salt flat in the world, covering about 4,000 square miles (10,000 square kilometers). Once part of the bottom of a giant lake, the lake is dry most of the year, but can be partially refilled with water during the rainy season.
