Crime – Uvalde: Police only overwhelmed the perpetrators after 75 minutes – Panorama

Uvalde (AP) – New surveillance videos of the killing spree at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, with 21 dead, have again triggered criticism of the police. A four-minute clip published by the Austin American-Statesman newspaper shows, among other things, how the perpetrator starts shooting in the school parking lot, then walks down the school hallway and how more than a dozen police officers finally storm the corridors, but without to catch the perpetrator. Later excerpts document that the police only overpowered the perpetrator around 75 minutes after their arrival.

A Senator in the Texas State Congress, Roland Gutierrez, criticized the lack of leadership of the emergency services on Wednesday. “I think the sad fact of May 24 is that no one took the lead,” Gutierrez told CNN. The father of a child who was killed complained that the clip was published. According to US media, an investigative committee of the Texas Congress originally promised the bereaved that they could watch the 77-minute long version of the recordings first.

An 18-year-old gunman killed 19 children and two teachers in the small town in southern Texas. The attacker shot the children and teachers in two connected classrooms with an assault rifle. The police were heavily criticized for their hesitant intervention. Nearly a month after the massacre, the school district police chief had been placed on furlough until further notice.
