Are you going to watch the supermoon tonight? The most impressive will be the moonrise, advises the astronomer

A huge bright moon, the so-called super full moon, will light up the sky on Wednesday evening. The Moon will be closest to Earth’s surface in its orbit. Compared to other full moons, it will appear about 15 percent larger, and above all, about a third brighter. The Moon came closest to the Earth on Wednesday around ten in the morning, the distance between the two bodies was approximately 357 thousand kilometers.

The moon orbits the Earth in a slightly eccentric ellipse, so it is sometimes closest, on the ground floor, and sometimes further away, that is, on the ground. If the full moon occurs at the moment when the moon is in the ground, then it appears larger. But it is only an optical illusion.

The full moon in the Czech Republic will occur at eight minutes past nine thirty. “Shortly after sunset, when people look to the east, they have a chance to see the moon rise, which is a very beautiful phenomenon,” says Petr Scheirich from the Astronomical Institute of the Academy of Sciences. But it will be possible to observe the super full moon all night long, even during the morning sunset.

Optical illusion

However, according to Petr Horálek from the Institute of Physics of the University of Silesia, the concept of a supermoon is misleading. The difference between the full moon on the ground and from the ground is very small, but the human brain compares the moon to other objects on the horizon and therefore appears larger.

On Wednesday night, it will not be appropriate to observe other astronomical objects, because the full moon will greatly illuminate the sky. Humans can see four planets with the naked eye: Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. At the end of July, the transit of Jupiter’s two moons will be visible, but this will require a small telescope.

The next supermoon will occur on August 31, 2023.
