Jakob Ingebrigtsen (21) thinks the world record in the 1500-meter is realistic in the long run, but rules out that it will happen during the World Championships in Eugene.

– Even though it is only a matter of a few seconds, there is still a very large gap that needs to be closed, the 21-year-old says during an interview session reproduced by the news site Reuters.
In 1998, Moroccan Hicham El Guerrouj ran to a world record with a time of 3.26.00 in the 1500-meter. A record that still stands today.
Ingebrigtsen himself ran into the Olympic record when he took gold in Tokyo with a time of 3.28.32, but does not believe that the record is within his reach – yet.
– It’s like asking people why they do not go under nine seconds in the 100 meters. It’s only a matter of half a second, Ingebrigtsen ironically explains why he does not think the record is possible to beat completely yet.
Still, he does not rule out that the world record is possible to beat in the long run.
– I think I can run faster. Of course, I’m trying to improve my time to get below 3.28, and if I can, I’m trying to get below 3.27. And finally, I might get closer to the world record. And if that is the case, the world record will be a realistic goal.
Now it is the turn of the World Cup in Eugene for Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who this time travels without dad Gjert and his brothers Filip and Henrik. The championship starts on July 15 – and the plan is to run both 1500 and 5000 meters.
– I go in for the 1500-meter first, then I will see how it goes. Then I’ll see if I participate in the 5000-meter and. But if everything goes according to plan, I will of course try to win as much as possible, says a confident Ingebrigtsen.
