The Volkswagen Caddy comes to the Czech Republic in a CNG version and with a longer body

The commercial Volkswagen Caddy in its fifth generation, introduced in 2020, has so far run on gasoline or diesel and offered a maximum of 122 horsepower. This is now changing – roughly two years after its launch, the automaker is coming up with a compressed natural gas version, labeled TGI.

The engine under the hood is a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine that produces 130 horsepower and is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The tanks hold 139 l, or 21.1 kg CNG.

Combined consumption is 4.3 kg of gas per 100 km, which means a theoretical range of 491 km per filling. With the current average price of CZK 57.71/kg, this means that one refueling costs CZK 1,218, and the theoretical price of fuel per kilometer is CZK 2.48. This is roughly the same as the diesel version of the caddy, but the emissions when burning CNG are significantly cleaner.

In practice, of course, fuel consumption corresponds to the demands that the driver has on the car – a fully loaded car in hilly terrain consumes more fuel than an empty car when driving on a flat surface.

Volkswagen prioritized the gas supply at the expense of gasoline, only 8.25 liters of which can fit in the emergency tank. Due to the space requirements of natural gas tanks, the TGI caddy is also only available as an extended Maxi version, but in a personal and utility version.

This means a total length of 4853 mm and, in the case of the passenger version, a width of the cargo space of 1185 mm and its length of 629, 1452 or 2265 mm, depending on whether one, two or three rows of seats are installed. In the case of the Cargo version, the cargo space is 1230 mm wide between the rear wheel arches and 2150 mm long.

Caddy Maxi TGI can already be ordered in the Czech Republic, at a price from 721,484 crowns for the utility version and from 942,825 crowns for the personal version. Both of these prices are without VAT.
