Apple will soon place the first MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, the first iPad Pro and other devices to its list of “legacy” products

many products will be placed to the list of products considered “legacy” by Apple on July 31. The list includes the first MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, the first iPad Pro and others.

Devices soon to be considered “old” by Apple

As a reminder, the first MacBook Pro with Touch Bar (a small screen that replaces the function keys (F1, F2, etc…)) were released in October 2016 as part of a complete overhaul of the MacBook Pro. Other new features included a thinner and lighter case, the butterfly keyboard, Touch ID, a larger Trackpad, and the removal of all ports except Thunderbolt ports and a headphone jack.

The Touch Bar no longer exists on the latest 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, but it’s still available on the 13-inch MacBook Pro.

the memo, obtained by the website MacRumorssays the 9.7-inch iPad Pro and several other devices will also be considered “legacy” by Apple at the end of the month. The full list of devices is:

  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, two Thunderbolt ports)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, four Thunderbolt ports)
  • MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016)
  • MacBook Air (13-inch, early 2015)
  • MacBook (12 inch, early 2016)
  • iMac (21.5 inch, Late 2015)
  • iMac (27-inch, Retina 5K, Late 2015)
  • iPad Pro (9.7-inch, Wi-Fi)
  • iPad Pro (9.7-inch, Wi-Fi + Cellular)

Products are considered legacy when Apple discontinued marketing more than five years ago and less than seven years ago. In this case, Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Centers will continue to offer repairs for these products for up to seven years; but, only subject to parts availability.

Separately, Apple will also add the original iPad mini that was released in 2012 to its list of discontinued products on July 31, according to the memo. The products are considered obsolete when Apple discontinued marketing over seven years ago. For example, the manufacturer no longer performs hardware repairs for obsolete products, but Mac notebooks may be eligible for a battery-only repair for an extended period of up to 10 years from the last product release date, subject to parts availability. Apple Authorized Service Centers cannot order parts for obsolete products.
