JK Rowling has given a number of tourism offices a close call. “In 99 percent of the cases, I’ve never seen the places they say inspired my books,” the author of the Harry Potter franchise wrote on social media.

“I’m afraid no street inspired Diagon Alley, it came out of my head,” Rowling said on Twitter. “I’ve actually never seen 99 percent of the places that are said to be inspirational.” The author of the Harry Potter stories says she feels sorry for the tourism boards who claim otherwise. “All the locations in Harry Potter are completely imaginary.”

Closet under the stairs

Although the writer understands that confusion has arisen about the house where the main character, the young wizard Harry, grew up. “It wasn’t until after writing the first three books that I realized that number four on Privet Drive looks exactly like the second house I grew up in.”

That house actually had a closet under the stairs, according to Rowling, making it the only place that wasn’t entirely out of her own imagination.
