UA decision by the Irish Data Protection Commission could terminate Meta’s data transfers between the United States and Europe.

According political mediathe institution, which is responsible for regulating the company whose European activities are grouped in Ireland, has decided to block Meta data transfers between Europe and the United States.

According to the documents consulted by our colleagues and confirmed by the Irish Commission, the document has been sent to all its local equivalents for consultation. They will have one month to comment before the ban takes effect.

For Meta, these transfers between Europe and the United States are crucial. Last February, Facebook threatened to cut its service in the European Union if such rules were to be put in place.

“This interim decision, which is subject to review by European data protection authorities, relates to a conflict between European law and US law which is in the process of being resolved. We welcome the agreement between the United States and the European Union establishing a new legal framework that will allow data transfers across borders,” Meta told Politico.

In its reaction, the company refers to negotiations between the two parties. Currently, the United States and Europe are discussing an agreement allowing companies like Meta to transfer data between the two continents. But the negotiations are still far from reaching their goal.

In the absence of a negotiated legal framework, Meta could therefore find itself without any solution to continue operating in the European Union, at least temporarily.

“We hope that this legal framework will allow us to keep families, communities and economies connected” concludes the company, which therefore does not seem to completely close the door to the disappearance, temporary or permanent, of its services in Europe. .
