In TV24’s “Press Club” program, discussing the attitude of the Russian-speaking population living in Latvia towards the war in Ukraine, the head of the Latvian Children’s Support Fund, voice of Latvian Radio 2, singer Kaspars Markšević tells about a case in Lithuania when a couple wanted a song to be played in Russian at their wedding. They have been told they can’t because it’s against the law.
“Maybe we are a bit too soft,” Markšević thinks. According to him, there should be stricter boundaries.
Markšević says that he regularly meets a seller from Ukraine at the pharmacy – only a few months have passed, but she already speaks Latvian.
“She understands what I want and can understand what she speaks in Latvian. So that willpower is huge!” emphasizes the singer, adding that there is no need to tell that you cannot learn the language.
